NEW AGE PARENTING-Challenging!
“Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.”— Robert Fulghum

National Centre for Excellence - Pre Primary School - New Age Parenting

Parenting has indeed been changing over the generations. The main focus, as we all know, is the safety of our children, which has been the same and never changed through the evolving generations. But we, as parents, are seeking innovative and effective ways with the changing trends in technology and lifestyle to give the best to our children.

The best part is being active with our children

National Centre for Excellence - Pre Primary School - Quality time with children

  • Nowadays, parents seem to be active as kids and are spending more time with them. The best gift a parent can give to their child is undivided attention in this world.

  • Stay-at-home moms or work-from-home parents are always physically active the whole day, even spending time with children throughout the day.

  • As parents we should enjoy reading books to them, watching animation movies, making crafts together with children, and taking them to the library and many social events and playdates.

  • They should be told our childhood games or stories, as they have access to more games and toys compared to our generation's. We should enjoy the fun and joy along with them.

  • Being active with children and spending more time is beneficial to both parents and children as we get to teach them well while participating in their fun activities. We also get more bonding time with them.

Encouraging their Imagination

National Centre for Excellence - Pre Primary School - Parents are the support factor

  • As young children during our childhood academics were our priority. But, in this generation, I feel, there is more focus on individual thinking, decision making, and imagination.

  • The children should be encouraged to think multidimensional and not just bookish. Encouraging imagination will develop creative skills.

  • Try gifting the young child, kitchen sets, tool sets, car repair sets, doctor sets which can make them behave like the one in that and this can be very useful in encouraging their imagination. As children have no limits in their imagination, this can help them to think beyond their boundaries.

Making screen time effective

National Centre for Excellence - Pre Primary School - Parenting Tip

  • That was an old saying. Tv is an idiot box. But, since we have smart TVs in most of our homes, if used effectively, TV is not that bad. Learn to make effective screen time with your child by watching their favorite shows, documentaries, cartoons, etc

  • We also should watch travel documentaries with our children to learn about different places and cultures. Watching shows like ‘Food Factory’, Master Chef, etc can help children to understand that food goes through a lot of processes before coming to our table.

  • This helped us to teach children not to waste food and also to teach them about the health benefits of a few food items. We can also watch Youtube channels of science videos for kids and how to make videos on crafts and arts.

More importance on outdoor play

National Centre for Excellence - Pre Primary School - Outdoor Play

  • As young children, we all know the importance of outdoor activities and playtime in the evenings. We should make sure they start Cycling, playing hide and seek, tag, and play, tossing the ball, Biking, skateboarding, swimming, etc. as we have a lot of options for outdoor play if weather permits.

  • This brings children closer to their friends and they will know the importance of being gentle and sharing with others.

Try not being overprotective

  • This generation of parents are no doubt over-protective about their little ones. We keep supervising our children's every move, kids when they play/ run or do anything, we should run to stop them doing something. We need to guide and it's ok to fall; our responsibility is only to encourage them to keep trying and learning from failures but not protect them from trying anything new.

  • As parents, we should teach them micromanaging/organizing everything for them ahead, or else spoon-feeding can lead to their failure. Parents should focus on making their children self-reliant in all aspects, let them make mistakes, and also own them so that they never repeat them.

  • Especially post-pandemic, we have to keep them aware of the harsh realities and make them aware of uncertainties instead of keeping them in a bubble.

I bet raising a child in today’s world is harder with all the technology and distractions, but never impossible. If you are a parent reading this please let us know -What are your new-age parenting rules? What rules work for you? Do let us know in the comments.
