Buzz around NEP 2020 and what’s in it for parents?
The NEP 2020 was released by the Union Cabinet on 29th July 2020. The purpose of the series of these newsletters is for parents to have an enhanced understanding of the NEP and engage in the education process of students effectively.
The last five newsletters from November 2022 to February 2022 have been decoding the six main areas of the NEP 2020:
· Creativity
· Multidisciplinary Approach to Learning
· Experiential Learning
· Build on future ready employability skills
· Windowed Assessments
· Transparent Progress Reports
The last issue on the Unlocking the NEP 2020 for parents revolves around ‘Transparent Progress reports’
The paradigm shift in Educational Report Cards as per the NEP 2022 will be one from:
1. ROTE MEMORISATION Competency – Based
Test Learning Development
Test Higher Order Thinking Skills
2. A 360- degree multidimensional report card that will focus on:
a. Affective Domain – the way we deal with things emotionally, such as feelings, values, appreciation, enthusiasm, motivations, and attitudes.
b. Cognitive Domain – focused on intellectual skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and creating a knowledge base.
c. Psychomotor Domain - physical movement, coordination, and use of the motor-skill areas.
AI- based software will help parents and teachers track student progress over the years to make informed career- choices based on
competencies and skills.
3. Board exams for Grades 10 and 12 will continue with the following amendments:
a. Two Examinations – one main examination and one for improvement.
b. Exams will test core capacities and competencies.
c. Subject choices for examinations will be varied, based on the student’s interest.
4. To enhance the results in Board Exams of Grades 10 and 12, examinations by a competent authority will be conducted for Grades 3, 5 and 8.
5. It is proposed to set up a National Assessment Centre, PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for
Holistic Development), as a standard-setting body under MHRD that fulfils the basic objectives of setting norms, standards, and guidelines
for student assessment and evaluation for all recognized school boards of India, guiding the State Achievement Survey (SAS)
and undertaking the National Achievement Survey (NAS), monitoring achievement of learning outcomes in the country, and encouraging
and helping school boards to shift their assessment patterns towards meeting the skill requirements of the 21st century in consonance with the stated objectives of this Policy.
6. The norms for entrance exams will be similar to Board Examinations; wherein a high- quality aptitude test will also comprise conceptual understanding and application of knowledge. The National Testing Agency will be in- charge of planning, designing and executing these tests.
7. Special Needs children will be given prominence in diverse interests and assessments based on their capabilities.
8. National and International Olympiads will be available to all and universities will be provided guidance to encourage such merit – based results.
9. Online Apps that comprise online quizzes, enrichment materials and assessments will be developed and available to all.
What’s NCFE Doing?
It is a matter of pride to note that NCFE has implemented most of the proposals of the NEP 2020 at a smaller scale, much within the capability.
1. Report Cards that test multiple competencies and skills will be rolled out for NCFE Grades 3-5 in 2022_23.
2. Career Guidance as a facility in school enhances parent and student awareness of a student’s interest and potential. This facility is
available from Grades 8 and above from the Academic year 21_22.
3. Online apps have been used in the Online Teaching Platform like Kahoot.
4. Board Exams Students go through 2-3 Mock Examinations to prepare them for Improvement.
5. National and International Olympiads are a norm and the ACER examinations will commence in 2022_23; to ensure students understand
their learning outcomes and their aptitudes from an international body like the Australian Council for Educational Research. (ACER)
6. Streamlined SEN department to address individual learning needs.
What do Parents need to do?
Connect with the school, attend the orientations and allow students to be exposed to these options.
