The first-generation BMW 4 Series was introduced to the South African market in 2013, marking a change in strategy for BMW as it sought to redefine its lineup and enhance its public appeal. Prior to the 4 Series’ launch, BMW’s coupés were traditionally part of the 3 Series range and the new line-up aimed to differentiate the two models by purpose and design.
By separating the coupé and convertible variants from the 3 Series and branding them as the 4 Series, BMW offered a model that was more than just a two-door version of the popular 3 Series sedan. It was a vehicle with its own identity, focused on delivering an enhanced driving dynamic and a sleeker, more aggressive design language. The 4 Series was – and still is – available in two-door, convertible, and Gran Coupé body styles.
In our August 2013 review of the 435i Steptronic, we noted:
“As an everyday driving proposition, the 435i strikes a good balance between comfort and sportiness, just as its contemporary 3 Series brethren do. The 4 Series is an engaging newcomer that makes its driver feel eminently ensconced behind the wheel.”
By creating a distinct model line separate from the 3 Series, BMW was able to offer South African buyers a stylish and dynamic alternative to its sibling. It was also a vehicle that enhanced the brand’s reputation for innovation and driving pleasure.

Rundown on the BMW 4 Series
The first-gen 4 Series has been offered with a range of engines that cater to various driving preferences, from fuel-efficient options to high-performance powerhouses. At the entry level, the 420i is powered by a 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This engine delivers 135 kW and 270 N.m of torque for a balanced mix of performance and efficiency.
For those looking for more performance, the 428i offers a more potent version of the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, tuned to 180 kW/350 N.m. The increase in power and torque makes the 428i a more engaging drive over the 420i, with sharper acceleration and a more dynamic feel on the road.

The 435i, positioned as a flagship model within the non-M division of the 4 Series, features a 3.0-litre, turbocharged inline-six engine. This powertrain produced 225 kW/400 N.m. The 420d was the only diesel in the range, offering 135 kW/380 N.m from its 2.0-litre engine.
BMW used the 2017 facelift to add extra power to the engines. The 420i gained an additional 20 N.m, while the power remained unchanged. The 428i’s nomenclature was changed to 430i, with power the output upped to 185 kW. The torque was left unchanged. The 435i was also renamed to 440i, and the power was increased significantly to 240 kW and 450 N.m.
All the engines were paired with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, though the former was gradually phased out in South Africa.
The M4 stands apart as the most iconic and powerful variant of the 4 Series. Engineered by BMW’s M division, the M4 takes the driving dynamics of the 4 Series to unprecedented heights. At the heart of the M4 is a 3.0-litre, twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, which, in its standard form, produces 317 kW and 550 N.m of torque. The M4 Competition (with the 2017 facelift) variant ups the ante even further, delivering 331 kW and the same amount torque, with enhancements to the chassis and suspension that make it an even more formidable performer. The 2017 M4 CS offered 338 kW/600 N.m, but this power was still down on the ludicrous 368 kW offered by the M4 GTS and DTM in 2016.
One of the standout features in the 4 Series is the iDrive infotainment system, which has evolved over the years to include more intuitive controls, a larger display, and enhanced connectivity options such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The iDrive system also offers navigation, voice control, and access to various vehicle settings. Driver assistance technologies include adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and parking sensors.

Things to look out for when buying a used BMW 4 Series
The BMW 4 Series is renowned for its performance, but models equipped with the N20 and N26 four-cylinder engines have been prone to timing-chain issues, which can lead to significant engine damage if not addressed promptly. It’s crucial to ensure that the timing chain has been inspected or replaced, especially in models that have clocked higher mileages.
Another is the high-pressure fuel pump, which has been known to fail in certain models. This can cause stalling or difficulty starting the engine. Replacing the fuel pump is the only reliable solution, and it’s wise to inquire about any previous work done in this regard when considering a purchase.
The eight-speed automatic transmission found in many models is generally reliable, but some owners have reported issues, especially in older models. These problems can sometimes be traced back to low transmission-fluid levels or old, degraded fluid. Additionally, rear-wheel-drive models can suffer from differential whine or leaks, so it’s essential to listen for unusual noises during a test drive and check for leaks.
Some owners have reported issues with the iDrive system, including screen freezing or system crashes. While these problems are usually resolved with software updates, it’s important to ensure that the system is functioning properly and has the latest software installed.

Which one to get?
The BMW 4 Series established itself as a desirable purchasing choice in South Africa, thanks to its blend of performance, luxury, and timeless design. As a model that stands out within BMW’s line-up, the 4 Series offers a compelling proposition for those seeking a premium driving experience without the price tag of a brand-new vehicle.
The model range offers a variety of engine options, from efficient four-cylinders to powerful six-cylinder units, each delivering a responsive and engaging driving experience. The rear-wheel-drive layout, a hallmark of BMW, ensures a balanced and dynamic drive, while the available xDrive all-wheel-drive system adds confidence in varied weather conditions.
Moreover, the BMW 4 Series’ engines are known for their reliability when well-maintained. Whether it’s the turbocharged four-cylinder in the 420i and 428i/430i, the muscular six-cylinder in the 435i/440i, or the powertrain benchmark-setting M4, these engines can deliver strong performance while remaining relatively fuel-efficient. Whether chasing driving dynamics in a petrol-powered model or wanting the fuel efficiency of the 420d, the BMW 4 Series stands out as a well-rounded choice for anyone in the market for a premium used vehicle.
