The iconic mid-engine coupe, known for its dominance in rally competitions, was reportedly driven by Barbara Riolfo before it struck twelve people behind the barriers.
Video footage captured the car accelerating rapidly before abruptly swerving to the right and colliding with barriers. The impact caused several onlookers to be knocked down. The Lancia 037, powered by a 2.0-litre engine with an Abarth supercharger that produced power figures that ranged between 188 kW and 206 kW with 333 N.m of torque. It is renowned for its lightweight design and impressive performance. Despite its relatively modest power output, its low weight allows it to achieve remarkable acceleration and as a result remains the last rear-wheel drive model to win the rally championship, pipping the Audi Quattro in that same year.
