A report from Japan claims that Toyota is considering replacing the 2.8-litre turbodiesel powerplant in the current Hilux and Fortuner lineup in favour of the new 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit that is set to make its debut in the next year. This rumour aligns with the Japanese automaker’s bid to transition towards less polluting engines in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint. In the application of the body-on-frame Hilux and Fortuner models, it is expected to produce 220 kW and 400 N.m while also improving efficiency and packaging constraints. The same engine platform will also be tuned to just under 300 kW and 549 N.m for other applications in Toyota’s portfolio.

The motor, codeveloped by Subaru and Mazda, which originally came to light a few months ago will also reportedly power new generation sports cars like the MR2 and Celica which are set to arrive by mid-to-late 2026 and 2025 respectively. In addition to this, competition models will make use of a 440 kW iteration of the motor. All of this aside, when compared to the existing 2.8-litre diesel mill in the outgoing Hilux and Fortuner lineup, the new petrol option is 30% more efficient and produces 30% more power based on its displacement. In terms of packaging, the new motor is also around 10% smaller in size.

With a variety of restrictions and limitations on new engine development, Toyota has made known that they are confident that these new petrol powertrains will be able to deliver and surpass current performance, additionally, these new engines will work with carbon-neutral fuels like ethanol, liquid hydrogen and synthetic fuels, further strengthening their bid for reduced emissions. If more power is required, they can also be paired with hybrid powertrains to further appeal in countries and regions that have strict regulations on emissions.

Irmscher Plotting SA Return As Opel Performance Brand? https://www.carmag.co.za/news/rumours/irmscher-plotting-sa-return-as-opel-performance-brand/ Thu, 05 Sep 2024 06:45:31 +0000 https://www.carmag.co.za/?p=999628905 While it remains unconfirmed, there is a high likelihood that Irmscher will be making a South African return as performance arm of Opel. Here is what we know so far.

Irmscher, a phrase that will likely resonate with South African petrolheads of a more mature age, could very well be plotting a South African return. Here is why we think so.

The Festival of Motoring took place over the past weekend and while the motor show as we know it locally from before may not exist in its current format, multiple automakers took to the event to unveil new vehicles and get a sense of appetite from the public. Launches from Suzuki with the Swift, Jaecoo, BYD and Ford with its Mustang were a few that drew crowds in the novel sights, but in the Stellantis corner, there were a few pieces of machinery that are not vaguely familiar with local roads yet.

“We have an incredible range of vehicles that fits all needs, whether you’re a student, micro-entrepreneur, or a CEO,” says Stellantis SA managing director Mike Whitfield. “The Festival of Motoring truly is a wonderful opportunity to remind the discerning South African motoring public of what this company is all about, the incredible broad range of vehicles that it has, and the promise of guaranteed mobility that underpins the purchase of every vehicle that we sell.”

Related: Lamborghini’s All-New Temerario Coming to SA in 2026

The broad selection mentioned above included a selection of electric Fiats, the newly endowed 2.0-litre petrol Jeep and the French arm of Stellantis were on display. Adjacent to them were two Opel models we have in South Africa, at a very quick glance, all looked hunky dory but upon closer inspection, the Corsa and Mokka on display were endowed with some sporty bits. The Irmscher logo appeared on the larger rims of each model, sitting more squat courtesy of lowered suspension and further exacerbated by bodywork that crept closer to the floor surface.

Not much information on either model was provided at the Festival of Motoring, although unconfirmed rumours that the Corsa would pack more of a punch, potentially putting it at arms length of the Swift Sport, started circulating.

When asked for a statement by CAR Magazine, the Opel product team remained tight-lipped and said correspondence would arrive in due course. While this doesn’t confirm nor deny the possibility of the Irmscher models making a return to South Africa after all of these years, we can hardly imagine the automaker would have simply brought these models into a trade show that brought 29 041 visitors from 22 countries without the intent of selling them.

Related: How It Started: Opel Corsa

At the show, Stellantis further added that it has shifted its focus more towards customer satisfaction which is underpinned by Stellantis’ Customer Care Pledge and includes a 5-year/100 000 km warranty, a mobility guarantee for vehicles under warranty that require more than 48 hours at the dealership or 30 days at an approved repairer, and optional security detail for roadside assistance.

Would these make a welcome addition to the Opel lineup locally?

This ambitious project aims to create the world’s most powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, reinforcing Toyota’s dedication to advanced internal combustion technology. This new engine is part of a broader initiative stemming from Toyota’s collaboration with Mazda and Subaru. The partnership, which focuses on the research and development of cutting-edge internal combustion engines, signifies a collective effort to push the boundaries of performance and efficiency.

According to sources from Japan, Toyota’s turbocharged 2.0-litre engine could achieve an astounding 441 kW in its top-spec racing configuration, without any electrification assistance. For street applications, a high-performance version is anticipated to produce around 294 kW and 550 N.m of torque. Additionally, a less potent variant is said to deliver approximately 221 kW and 400 N.m of torque. The precise applications of this potent powerplant within Toyota Gazoo Racing’s lineup remain undisclosed. However, its high-performance capabilities suggest it could be a formidable choice for future race and rally cars.

Related: The Modern Toyota Celica Could Look Like This

In terms of street-legal applications, the engine appears to be an ideal candidate for future sports cars. Toyota is reportedly exploring the possibility of reintroducing the MR2 roadster, offering both electric and internal combustion engine versions. The rumoured GRMN performance variant might combine the new 2.0-litre engine with Toyota’s GR-Four all-wheel-drive system. Similarly, this engine and drivetrain combination could also be utilized in a potential revival of the Celica, envisioned as a front-engined, two-door coupe.

Although these reports are speculative, the notion of a Toyota MR2 GRMN being produced in limited quantities exclusively for the Japanese market is particularly intriguing. Such a model might offer an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 6-speed manual option, akin to those available in the GR Corolla and GR Yaris hot hatches.

The Toyota Celica could make a comeback, and prospective renders have it looking better than ever. After a hiatus of nearly two decades, this is what a 2025 iteration could look like.

Toyota Celica

Looking for a new or used Toyota? Find it here with CARmag!

First launched in 1970, the Toyota Celica swiftly became a legend in the sports car world. With its sporty handling, stylish design, and a range of engine options, it quickly captured the hearts of driving enthusiasts. The Celica was offered in various body styles, including coupes, liftbacks, and convertibles, catering to a wide array of preferences. By the time it reached its seventh generation, the Celica featured a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and shared its platform with models like the Prius, Corolla, Avensis, and RAV4.

However, the Celica was discontinued in 2006 due to declining sales. As consumer preferences shifted towards SUVs and crossovers, the demand for sports cars dwindled. Increased competition from other manufacturers and Toyota’s internal focus on more profitable models further contributed to the Celica’s demise. Over the past 18 years, rumours of the Celica’s revival have circulated persistently, fueling numerous rendering artists to create unofficial designs. One such design, covered nearly a year ago, featured a Supra-like body with a front end reminiscent of the latest-gen Prius.

Related: Toyota Supra 35th Anniversary Edition revealed with unique kit

The most recent rendering, created by A1 Cars on YouTube, follows a similar recipe. The artist used the GR Supra’s body as a base, modifying the front and rear ends, and tweaking the profile to give it a modern, yet nostalgic feel.

Toyota Celica

The potential return of the Toyota Celica could be a highly successful venture for the brand. The name still holds significant nostalgia for many car enthusiasts, and a modern interpretation of this classic sports car could captivate a new generation. Success will depend on various factors like styling, pricing and performance but ince this project is unconfirmed, there is also no knowing if Toyota will revive the nameplate using another configuration, like Ford has done with the electrified Capri that has evolved into an SUV.

Set to hit the market later this year, the new X3 will come with two updated engine options. However, it seems that there won’t be a high-performance M model in this generation.

According to BMWBlog, BMW has decided not to offer an M version of the new X3. Instead, the sportiest variant available will be the X3 M50, which boasts a slightly upgraded version of BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine. The focus on an M model is shifting towards a performance version of the upcoming iX3 electric crossover.

This move aligns with earlier reports from 2022, suggesting that BMW’s high-performance SUV lineup might transition to electric-only models likely utilising the Neue Klasse architecture. This platform promises substantial power, with capabilities reaching some impressive and arguably unnecessary power figures though the performance SUV is expected to offer at least 450 kW.

Despite the disappointment that the segment is evolving into silent electrification, it is worth noting that the X3M found rivals in the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and Porsche Macan, both of which are also going to become electric. For now, BMW has not officially confirmed these reports leaving some hope that this may just be a rumour, but it is unlikely considering the German automaker’s future roadmap.

While the new X3 promises to impress with its design and technology, the lack of an M model marks the end of an era for petrol-powered performance SUVs in BMW’s lineup.

While details remain scarce, sources close to BMW have confirmed to European publications that the German automaker has greenlit the development of new electric i1 and i2 models. These EVs are expected to be built in Munich and will exist as a separate electric range alongside the traditional 1 and 2 Series.

“We want to connect with the younger generation,” said Bernd Koerber, Head of Product and Brand Management at BMW, as reported by Autocar. “Expanding in all markets” is another key objective, he added, Koerber acknowledges that these new electric vehicles might have a lower profit margin but emphasizes their role in attracting younger demographics and establishing a foothold in new markets. He also highlights the continued importance of the Mini brand in this segment.

The electric i1 is slated for a 2027 launch, with the sportier i2 following in 2028. Notably, unlike the existing 1 and 2 Series which utilize the FAAR platform, the new electric vehicles are rumoured to be built on the new, dedicated Neue Klasse electric car architecture. This dedicated platform is expected to offer a range of benefits specifically designed for electric vehicles.

Diesel-powered GWM Tank 300 for SA? https://www.carmag.co.za/news/rumours/diesel-powered-gwm-tank-300-for-sa/ Fri, 21 Jun 2024 03:30:26 +0000 https://www.carmag.co.za/?p=999607135 Impressing during our SUV Shootout, the one drawback to the petrol-powered GWM Tank 300 was its high fuel consumption which has prompted the question of whether an oil burner is on the cards for SA. Here is what we know so far.

The post Diesel-powered GWM Tank 300 for SA? appeared first on CAR Magazine.

]]>
After demonstrating exceptional performance both on and off-road during the SUV Shootout 2024, the GWM Tank 300 has prompted the question: “Why isn’t there a diesel variant?”

Tank 300

Looking for a new or used GWM? Find it here with CARmag!

The current Tank 300 lineup comprises three models, all equipped with petrol engines: a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder and a petrol-electric hybrid combining the same engine with an electric motor. The Tank 300 tested during the shootout featured the hybrid configuration. Describing it as powerful would be an understatement; it was significantly the most potent 4×4 in our tests. The flagship model, exclusively available with this powertrain, delivers 255 kW and 648 N.m of torque, with peak torque available from as low as 1 700 r/min.

Related: SUV Shootout Part 8: GWM Tank 300 2.0T HEV 4×4 Super Luxury AT

In comparison, the non-hybrid variant produces 162 kW and 380 N.m of torque. However, the high power output of the petrol engine comes with the drawback of increased fuel consumption.

During our road trip, which included highway, gravel, and off-road driving, the GWM’s digital instruments frequently displayed an average fuel consumption of around 15 L/100 km. For added security, we carried a jerry can of unleaded petrol, although it remained unused.

Why a Diesel GWM Tank 300 is Viable for South Africa

CarNewsChina recently reported that a diesel variant of the Tank 300 is under development. This model is expected to feature GWM’s GW4D24 diesel engine, which, although not as powerful or torquey as the hybrid, will offer better fuel efficiency. The diesel engine generates 135 kW and 480 N.m of torque.

Related: GWM Tank 300 diesel – Everything we know

The potential introduction of the diesel Tank 300 to the South African market could be highly advantageous. South Africans have a strong preference for diesel 4x4s, particularly because of the ample torque available at lower revs, which enhances off-road performance. Additionally, the diesel engine’s improved fuel efficiency is a significant benefit, given the high fuel consumption observed with the petrol variants.

The diesel Tank 300 would cater to the local demand for economical and robust 4x4s, making it a strategic addition to GWM’s portfolio in South Africa.

Bugatti is set to unveil a new chapter in its 115-year legacy on June 20th. The upcoming hypercar will boast a completely new design, crafted from the ground up with an emphasis on elegance, luxury, and performance.

Image: Bugatti

Taking inspiration from Bugatti’s illustrious past, the design pays homage to three iconic models: the Type 57 SC Atlantic, the Type 41 Royale and the Type 35 (a dominant force in Grand Prix racing). These influences combine to create a modern interpretation of the quintessential Bugatti spirit.

An all-new chassis and aerodynamically optimized body will house a revolutionary powertrain featuring a novel V16 engine and an electrified drivetrain, signifying a harmonious blend of timeless engineering and cutting-edge technology. Unlike the quad-turbocharged setups found in the Veyron and Chiron, Bugatti’s new engine boasts a naturally aspirated configuration. This new V16 unit replaces the outgoing W-16 configuration and adopts a hybrid layout instead, potentially incorporating three electric motors – two mounted on the front axle and one integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Related: Bugatti Says Final Farewell to the Chiron With Stunning L’Ultime

Whispers suggest the engine will displace a substantial 8.3-litres, generating an estimated approximately 746 kW and reaching a potential peak r/min of 9 500. The electric motors are rumoured to elevate the combined output to a staggering roughly 1 324 kW. Acceleration figures are believed to be equally impressive, with whispers indicating a 0-100 km/h sprint time of in seconds, 0-200 km/h achieved in less than five seconds, and 0-300 km/h accomplished in under 10 seconds. The electronically limited top speed is said to be 447 km/h, while the 0-400 km/h dash is rumoured to take less than 25 seconds.

While the official unveiling is just days away, deliveries are not expected to commence until 2026. Additionally, the Chiron successor is expected to be even more exclusive than its predecessors, with rumours suggesting a production run limited to a mere 250 units. This compares to the 450 Veyrons and 500 Chirons produced.

According to multiple reports, including from The Korea Economic Daily, Hyundai’s hydrogen-powered supercar is set to debut in 2026, four years after the concept car was first revealed. Internally referred to as the “N74,” this Hyundai flagship sports car is reportedly being developed as a rear-wheel-drive two-door coupe with gullwing doors – much akin to what the original DeLorean DMC-12 was. Despite this, its design language harks back to the 1974 Pony Coupe, Hyundai’s very first car.

The primary goal of the N74 is not to generate profit but to showcase hydrogen as a viable and exciting mobility technology. With the success of the Ioniq 5 N proving that battery-powered EVs can be potent and exciting, Hyundai now aims to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen fuel cell performance vehicles. While the concept boasted 494 kW, the production model is expected to deliver at least 563 kW with claims of a three second 0-100 km/h sprint time.

Related: Volkswagen Unveils Golf GTI Mk8.5

The N74 aims to challenge the Nürburgring lap record for production cars, currently held by the Mercedes-AMG One with a time of 6 minutes and 35.183 seconds. Hyundai’s supercar is expected to complete two full laps of the Nordschleife at full speed before needing a recharge. Hyundai plans to produce only 200 units of the N74, with production running from 2026 to 2028. Prototype testing is reportedly set to begin this August. The N74 is expected to cost around 500 million won, converting to just shy of R7 million.

As always, such information should be taken with a grain of salt. If accurate, the N74 could offer an intriguing alternative to the current range of internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, and electric supercars, thanks to its unique powertrain and striking design.

Toyota is Planning on Introducing a Fun, Compact MX-5 Rival https://www.carmag.co.za/news/rumours/toyota-is-planning-on-introducing-a-fun-compact-mx-5-rival/ Fri, 10 May 2024 09:35:33 +0000 https://www.carmag.co.za/?p=999605395 Toyota unveiled the SF-R concept as an MX-5 rival at the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2016 and despite being all those years ago, the firm is rumoured to go ahead with production. Details are scarce but it could include a front-mounted turbocharged three-cylinder motor powering the rear wheels. Would this be a winner here?

Not so long ago at the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2016, Toyota unveiled a diminutive-looking model that had a two-plus-two layout and two doors. At the time, the model dubbed the S-FR concept was considered to be a potential MX-5 rival. It looks as thought Toyota may deliver on what that concept promised those years ago.

According to a reputable Japanese publication, the S-FR is slated for a late 2026 or early 2027 launch. The magazine indicates that Toyota is developing this project in partnership with Daihatsu and Suzuki, which were previously rumoured to be working on a small, mid-engined car. The collaboration has apparently shifted to a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe, which will form the basis of the S-FR and make it the ideal MX-5 rival.

Image: Toyota

The S-FR will reportedly feature a turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing around 112 kW, driving the rear wheels. Based on these prospective outputs, it is unlikely that this 3 pot will be the same GR-bred motor used in the full-fat Yaris and Corolla models although a similar power output and engine configuration is rumoured for a revived Toyota Starlet GR performance version.

Related: Toyota Reveals Suzuki Fronx-based Urban Cruiser Taisor

With the concept debuting almost a decade ago, the exterior design of the production S-FR is expected to differ greatly. There’s no confirmation yet on whether the racing-oriented styling elements from the S-FR Racing concept, such as its large rear wing, canards, splitter, and diffuser, will make it into production although these could be reserved for a hypothetical GR model. Prospective pricing looks good too, expected to come in cheaper than the MX-5 for the home market. For context, the Mazda model sold for around the R600 000 mark locally.

Related: Toyota Gazoo Racing Dominates in Croatia and SA Rallies

There is no confirmation yet on whether Toyota intends to export the model anywhere other than Japan, but should it adopt a GR moniker too, it could serve as one of the most affordable in the lineup. Would it make sense in the South African context?
