
Though local new-vehicle sales have seen a steady increase in November 2024, vehicle exports continued to decline in the 11th month of 2024. A few manufacturers’ export sales did, however, increase. Here’s South Africa’s top-five vehicle exporters in November 2024.

New-vehicle sales in South Africa in November 2024 saw an increase of 8.1% compared to November 2023, which, according to naamsa, could signal the start of a the “long-awaited” upward trend in SA’s new-vehicle market. However, November 2024’s export-sales figures stood in stark contrast to the latter (and November 2023’s, for that matter).
Indeed, exports of new, locally-built vehicles continued to decline in the second to last month of 2024, with the November 2024 export sales amounting to 30 431 units, a decrease of 12 110 (or 28.6%) vehicles compared to the 42 641 vehicles exported in November 2023.

“Although the European Central Bank has cut interest rates by 25 basis points in October 2024, with the Bank of England and the US Federal Reserve doing the same in November 2024, the global macro-economic context has become more challenging. The US dollar has appreciated against most currencies, including the Rand […] Domestic vehicle exports will remain a function of the direction and the economic performance of global markets in the new year.”

But who was the top-five vehicle exporters in SA in the 11th month of 2024? Here’s the top five, including a closer look at what changes there have been compared to October 2024.

- Ford — 10 574
- Mercedes-Benz — 8 400

So, what changes were there in the list? Well, for starters, Ford, who exported the third-most vehicles in October 2024, placed first in November 2024, with the local arm of the Blue Oval brand exporting 10 574 vehicles, an increase of 6 079 units.
Though placing second on the list, Mercedes-Benz, who recorded the most exports in October 2024, also saw an increase in vehicle exports compared to the previous month. In November 2024, the Three-pointed Star brand exported 700 more vehicles.
BMW moved up one spot on the list. No doubt owing to the start of production of the new X3, the company’s exports increased by 1 900 vehicles in November 2024. Compared to October 2024, Toyota moved down two spots, with the Japanese automaker’s exports seeing a decrease of 739 vehicles. Volkswagen, who remained in fifth position, also saw a decline in vehicle exports (down by 235 units).
