Over in Bavaria, BMW’s all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) has been given a sleek overhaul. But the changes aren’t reserved for the visible and tactile aspects of the iX, the emissions-free model boasts increased performance, improved efficiency, and an extended range. Quashing any queries of range anxiety, the flagship iX xDrive60 is now rated at a WLTP range of up to 701 km, setting a new benchmark in its segment. This improvement stems from BMW’s EfficientDynamics measures and advancements in eDrive technology. Optimizations in performance electronics, wheel bearings, and tyres have resulted in a more than 8% increase in efficiency, translating to an additional 60 km of range for the iX xDrive60.

Set to launch globally in March of 2025, the new BMW iX will be available in three variants: the BMW iX xDrive45, which delivers 300 kW of power and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds with a WLTP range of 490-602 km; the BMW iX xDrive60, offering 400 kW and a 0-100 km/h time of 4.6 seconds with a range of 563-701 km; and the high-performance BMW iX M70 xDrive, producing up to 485 kW in My Mode Sport and sprinting to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds (or 3.5 seconds with the rollout method), with a range of 521-600 km. All models will continue to be produced at BMW’s Dingolfing plant, with the South African launch expected in Q3 2025.

On the surface, a redesigned BMW kidney grille with illuminated “Iconic Glow” elements is paramount to the changes, revised adaptive LED headlights, and a more seamless front and rear apron design. A new optional M Sport package enhances the iX’s athletic character, introducing striking air intakes and vertical reflectors. The top-tier iX M70 xDrive further distinguishes itself with M-specific design elements, including black mirror caps and exclusive 22-inch M light-alloy wheels. New colour options include Arctic Race Blue, Dune Grey, Carbon Black, Frozen Deep Grey, Frozen Pure Grey, Tanzanite Blue, and Space Silver, with the Individual Exterior Line Titanium Bronze available as an additional customization option.

All BMW iX models feature dual-motor electric all-wheel drive, with power output increases across the range. The iX xDrive45 gains an additional 60 kW, while the iX xDrive60 enjoys a 15 kW boost. Meanwhile, the high-performance iX M70 xDrive now produces up to 485 kW in My Mode Sport, delivering exhilarating acceleration and a top speed of 250 km/h. Further improvements extend to charging technology. The iX xDrive45 now supports DC fast charging at up to 175 kW, while the iX xDrive60 and M70 xDrive can charge at up to 195 kW. Enhanced battery pre-conditioning and heat pump integration contribute to more efficient charging and increased driving range.

With these enhancements, the 2025 BMW iX reaffirms its position as a leader in the luxury electric SAV segment, offering greater range, efficiency, and driving pleasure than ever before.

Audi has just whipped the covers off of the Q6 E-Tron Offroad concept which hints at the German automaker’s vision for a capable electric off-road vehicle. Not likely to see production wearing all of this kit, it still remains a cool vision of what is possible.

Q6 e-tron

Debuting on Audi’s social media channels, the automaker has now released some more concrete information on what is available with the high-riding all-electric bakkie. Likely serving as a concept to gauge customer interest in a potential production version, much of the exterior borrows styling cues from the Q6 Sportback e-tron.

That said, it bears much of the styling prominent on the Sportback up front but with off-roading in mind, it features significantly widened wheel arches that accommodate dark alloy wheels equipped with chunky off-road tyres. Under the ‘bonnet’, the Q6 e-tron concept boasts dual electric motors that deliver a combined output of 380 kW, matching the SQ6 e-tron in Boost mode. However, the most obvious changes are the aggressive modifications that make this seem like a viable choice for venturing off of the beaten path. Equipped with portal axles, the Q6 E-Tron Sportback now comes with a significant 160 mm increase in ride height and a 250 mm wider track.

“The debuting Q6 gives a taste of a potential vehicle in the progressive off-road segment,” said Audi, suggesting plans to incorporate more rugged capabilities into its electric vehicle lineup. “We look forward to seeing our customers’ reactions to this highly emotive car,” commented CEO Gernot Dollner.

Image: Audi

Related: Review: Audi Q7 55 TFSI Black Edition

Unlike conventional setups, the Q6 e-tron’s portal axles integrate directly into the wheel hubs, necessitating a redesigned suspension system by Audi. This configuration translates to a whopping total wheel torque of 13 400 N.m, a substantial 4 400 N.m increase over traditional axles. This figure is available in short 10-second bursts but it is worth noting that this value reflects the torque delivered to the wheels after multiplication by the portal axles’ gear ratios, not the raw output of the electric motors themselves.

Q6 e-tron

Image: Audi

Audi explains that while traditional portal axles typically provide a 20-30% increase in wheel torque, their design offers a significant 50% boost. This capability comes at the expense of a slightly reduced top speed of 175 km/h, which when considering its pioneering purpose is a more than acceptable trade-off. In exchange for the reduced speed, the Q6 e-tron concept can tackle gradients of up to 45 degrees.

Whether this will ever make it into production is unknown and unlikely, but it provides a glimpse into Audi’s electric future and how its technology can be implemented for off-roading.

Starting on the outside, the Outlander Sport owes its provenance to Mitsubishi’s “Silky & Solid” concept and is said to feature a sporty exterior that retains the traditional SUV aesthetic. The front grille is three-dimensional, flanked by bold LED daytime running lights making the Mitsubishi instantly recognizable and shying away from the cookie cutter of SUV styling. The rear taillights also adopt the same T-shape from the front.

Inside, the instrument panel is designed for optimal forward visibility, allowing drivers to easily navigate challenging terrain. A large display panel integrates a 12.3-inch Smartphone-link Display Audio system with a multi-widget function that can display various information on a single screen. GL and GLS models come with an 8-inch version of this system.  The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Exceed boasts a class-leading sound system co-developed with Yamaha Corporation. The system includes eight speakers, with front tweeters on the A-pillars, woofers in the front doors, and coaxial two-way speakers in the rear doors.

Under the bonnet, the Outlander Sport is powered by a 1.5-litre DOHC 16-valve MIVEC engine offering 77 kW @ 6 000 r/min and 141 N.m @ 4 000 r/min. Mitsubishi highlighted that this engine is paired with a high-efficiency CVT for low fuel consumption and a quiet ride. No confirmed data on the fuel consumption is available for the local market however abroad, the Outlander Sport manages 7.8 L/100 km in a combined cycle which should make it competitive if this is attainable in the real world.

Pricing:

  • Outlander Sport 1.5 GL CVT – R429 990
  • Outlander Sport 1.5 GLS CVT – R449 990
  • Outlander Sport 1.5 Aspire CVT – R479 990

The Outlander Sport is offered as a two-wheel drive but leverages Mitsubishi’s expertise in off-road driving. Four drive modes, including Normal, Wet, Gravel, and Mud, allow the vehicle to handle various road conditions. The integration of Active Yaw Control adjusts drive between the wheels to improve controllability, traction control, engine control, and power steering control.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport rides on MacPherson strut suspension up front and a torsion beam set up at the rear, with disc brakes all around. The suspension has been specifically developed for comfortable handling on various terrains. With a ground clearance of 222 mm, the Outlander Sport can confidently traverse even the roughest roads. Approach and departure angles of 21.0 degrees and 30.5 degrees further enhance its off-road capability.

This extensive modification ensures optimal stability and performance even in the most demanding off-road conditions.

Inside, the AT37 receives Arctic Trucks-branded dash trim, sill plates, and premium floor mats adding a touch of exclusivity, while an upgraded shift lever comprises the upgrades.

Looking for a new or used vehicle? Find it here with CARmag!

Replacing the D300 engine option in Land Rover’s local Defender line-up, the D350 variants employ a new 3.0-litre, six-cylinder diesel powertrain. The twin-turbocharged oil-burner churns out a healthy 257 kW and 700 N.m of torque (increases of 36 kW and 50 N.m over the D300), available from 4 000 and just 1 500 r/min, respectively. Drive is sent to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

According to the South African arm of the British brand, the additional power and twisting force provided by the D350 unit allow for a more engaging and effortless driving experience, whether on-road or off the beaten track. The company also mentioned that, thanks to these outputs, the overtaking and towing capabilities of the Defender have been improved.

Land Rover claims 0-100 km/h sprint times of 6.2, 6.4 and 6.8 seconds for the 90, 110 and 130 D350 models, respectively. The top speed is rated at 191 km/h, though specifying 22-inch wheels lifts this figure to 209 km/h. Claimed average fuel consumption are 8.3 (90), 8.5 (110) and 8.7 L/100 km (130).

In case you didn’t know, South Africans love a good double cab bakkie! And for good reason. These vehicles are among the most versatile in the global car market, but they are particularly favoured in good ol’ Sunny SA. Simply because they tick all the boxes, and nearly every South African considering a bakkie as their next purchasing option will opt for (according to sales) the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max first. Then the rest.

Below, we’re not doing a nitty-gritty, like-for-like comparison. Instead, we’re going to explore what each contender brings to the table. The pretenders: the Isuzu D-Max 1.9TD LS X-Rider 4×2 AT, Ford Ranger 2.0 SiT XLT 4×2 AT, Toyota Hilux 2.4 GD-6 Raider 4×2 AT, and the newly launched Mitsubishi Triton 2.4 GLS AT.

Let’s be frank: the Isuzu D-Max has a reputation as a no-nonsense workhorse when it comes to bakkies, and the 1.9TD LS X-Rider proves it can also turn heads. The X-Rider, based on the LS derivative, is all about style, with black accents on the grille, side steps, and roll bar for an attention-grabbing look. The signature red “X-Rider” badging is hard to miss, and 18-inch alloy wheels round off the package nicely. Inside, the X-Rider boasts leather upholstery with red stitching, while the seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system allows for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine delivers 110 kW and 350 N.m of torque. While it’s not the most powerful engine in the segment, it impresses with real-world fuel figures in the 10 L/100 km region. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, but turbo lag is evident. Still, the bakkie can run comfortably at the national speed limit.

Ford Ranger 2.0 SiT XLT 4×2 AT

The Ford Ranger has long been a benchmark for bakkies in the double cab segment, underlined by it winning the 2023 South African Car of the Year competition – the first bakkie to do so! In XLT 2.0 SiT trim, the bakkie retains the modern design language of its stablemates, adding to the Ranger’s commanding on-road presence.

Where the Ranger truly shines, though, is its tech-savvy nature. The 10.1-inch SYNC 4 infotainment system, found in more expensive models, is also at play in the XLT and comes with a raft of features that include over-the-air updates and seamless smartphone integration. There are also active and passive safety features, as well as keyless entry and -start, and automatic rain-sensing wipers.

Toyota Hilux 2.4 GD-6 Raider 4×2 AT

The Hilux is a household name in South Africa and is synonymous with reliability and an impressive resale value when it comes to bakkies. The 2.4 GD-6 Raider builds on this reputation but without the asking price of the more yearned-for variants.

Powered by a 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine producing 110 kW and 400 N.m, the Hilux balances performance with efficiency. While not the most powerful of bakkies in this company, its tried-and-tested reliability is its biggest drawcard. Paired with a 6-speed auto gearbox, it offers effortless cruising.
